Puerto Limón

With around 58,000 inhabitants, Puerto Limón is one of the largest cities in Costa Rica after the capital, San José. The port is the main port of the country on the Caribbean coast, where large quantities of coffee, bananas or pineapples are still shipped throughout the world.

In the year 1502, Christopher Columbus was the first European to set foot in Puerto Limón. After several exploratory trips, he was said to have been so impressed that he gave the region the name “Costa Rica”, which translates as “rich coast”. Even today, every September is solemnly honours the arrival of Columbus.

The main attractions of Puerto Limón include the Parque Vargas. The small city park gives an impression of the incredible variety of tropical plants in the area, without having to leave the city. With a little luck, you will find relaxed sloths and other exotic animals.

If you would like to explore Puerto Limón by yourself, we recommend a walk through the city additionally a visit to the city park. Puerto Viejo

About one hour south of Puerto Limón is the former manageable fishing village of Puerto Viejo. Located on the beautiful Caribbean coast, the small town is known for its Caribbean flair and the relaxed life of its inhabitants. In small restaurants and bars, you can taste local specialties. A visit to the sandy beaches, located next to jungle, are worth-while as they are often deserted, so you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. Puerto Viejo has also become a popular surf spot for surfers. On a quiet spot in Salsa Brava Bay, you can watch surfers in search for the perfect wave.

Cahuita National Park

Ideally, a visit to Puerto Viejo can be combined with the Cahuita National Park. Less than half an hour from Puerto Viejo is the second oldest national park in the country, originally set up to protect the coral reef off the coast. There are mangrove trees, swamp forests, lagoons and ancient trees in the national park including white and black sand beaches .

The park can be reached through two entrances. A 7 km long hiking trail connects the two entrances and leads around the peninsula through the park near the sea. In addition to the impressive variety of plants you may also see parrots, monkeys, sloths, caimans, frogs, snakes, toucans or even anteaters. You will surely be amazed – to see how close you will be to these animals! Additionally, the path will lead you to the Playa Cahuita, a sandy beach where you can take a break under coconut palms or take a refreshing dip in the sea.

During a snorkelling trip at Playa Puerto Vargas you can also discover more than 30 different coral species as well as different fishes and sea turtles.

Tortuguero Canals

Another worthwhile destination for a shore excursion is the Tortuguero National Park, which is characterized by a breath-taking canal and lagoon landscape and is often compared to the Amazon. In this national park is also the village of the same name Tortuguero, where approximately 500 people live and can be reached only by water or from the air.

The jungle is home to an incredible variety of flora and fauna. About half of the reptile and bird species of Costa Rica are said to live here. Cruises on the canals are a great way to see these animals in their natural habitat. So, you have the chance to see howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, turtles, caimans, toucans, reptiles, manatees and many other species.

Additionally, Tortuguero is known for the annual laying of turtle eggs on the beach. Every year from July to October innumerable eggs are laid here in the evening, which hatch about 6 weeks later and disappear as baby turtles in the sea. The observation of this spectacle is allowed to protect the animals, however, only in the context of a guide.

Veragua Rainforest & Adventure Park

The Veragua rainforest is less than an hour from Puerto Limón and covers an area of ​​approximately 1300 hectares. There is a lot to see and to discover here. It is also possible to ride in a sort of cable car (aerial tram) on the summit of the rainforest and the spread in the Caribbean zip lines (zip lines) are also available. In both cases, you have an impressive view over the treetops. In addition, the park has a butterfly house, interesting terrariums with reptiles, such as the famous red-eyed tree frog and other exciting animals.

Entry and visa

If you travel to Costa Rica on a cruise, you do not need a visa. However, you will need a passport that is still in good condition and valid for at least the day of entry and the following day.

As the regulations in the other ports of your Caribbean cruise can deviate from this, it is generally recommended to carry a passport with a validity of at least six months beyond the end of your stay.

To be on the safe side, we generally recommend that you check all valid entry requirements directly with your cruise line shipping company and the Foreign Office in good time before your cruise.

National currency

The official currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rica Colón (CRC). 1.00 USD is equivalent to about 596.32 CRC and 1.00 GBP is equivalent to about 786.23 CRC. Many places also accept the US dollar as their currency, especially in tourist locations, prices are often quoted directly in US dollars. These can be exchanged before the cruise begins. In addition to cash, credit cards are very common and are often accepted as a means of payment.

Taxi and public transport

If you have not booked a transfer or guided shore excursion, taxis are available for you at the port. The official taxis have taximeters called “Marias” in the country. The fares are basically fixed, but you are still welcome to try and negotiate the price. Before your ride, we recommend that you confirm if you can pay by credit card or US dollars.

The way to the centre of Puerto Limón is also within walking distance. For your safety’s sake, avoid exploring remote lanes.

Travel time

In Puerto Limón there is generally a tropical climate with year-round high temperatures. The temperature in the sea is suitable for swimming all year round. If you want to avoid a lot of rain and high temperatures, the best time to visit is during the winter season which is between November to April. During these months the weather is normally at its best for a holiday in Costa Rica. During the dry season it is usually sunny and the average temperature is between 25 and 30 degrees. Despite the dry season you should expect some rain in places along the coast. In order to explore the rainforests in full green, is a trip during the rainy season are normally between May and November.
