Your local guide will meet you at the agreed meeting point and take you on your exclusive shore excursion in Tallinn. You will start the day with a walk through the charming medieval streets of the historic center of Tallinn.
The Old Town of Tallinn consists of two quarters: Toompea, also called “Upper town”, and All Linn, also called “Lower Town”. Estonia was always ruled by Toompea. Even today, both the seat of the Parliament and the Government of Estonia are here – the first meeting in the castle Toompea, the latter in the house Stenbock. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Cathedral of St. Mary are also located here. From the Belvedere you will enjoy a breathtaking view of the city.
Then you will explore All Line, Tallinn’s Lower City, where Renaissance alternate between Baroque facades with the world-renown Hanseatic architecture. This style is also known as Brick Gothic. The oldest cobbled streets and buildings date back to the 13th century. From the bastions and towers of the old city walls, which you see on Muurivahe Street, especially the Powder Tower – also called Kiek in de Kok – is remarkable. Now your tour takes us past the Dominican monastery of St. Catherine and the Cistercian convent of St. Michael. The undoubtedly most famous sights of the Lower Town are the House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads – a guild of young, unmarried merchants, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the St. Nicholas Church and the St. Olaf’s Church, whose tower was the tallest building in the world from 1549 to 1625.
Your tour ends at the imposing Raekoja Square (Town Hall Square), where you can see the Town Hall building from 1404 and the Great Guild built in 1410, in whose gothic hall the merchants of the city used to meet. On the opposite side of the square there is the Raeapteek (Town Hall Pharmacy), which has been open since the early 15th century, making it the oldest pharmacy in the world.
Now you will go out of the city and explore the coastal region around Pirita with the Russalka monument directly on the sea by bus. Take a look at the ruins of St. Birgitta Monastery before you reach Kadriorg Park. The stark contrast between the Baroque Kadriorg Castle on the one hand and the ultra-modern Kumu Modern Art Museum on the other hand is always fascinating.
Together with your tour guide you will travel back to your cruise ship. Alternatively, you can stay in town on your own and return to the ship independently at a later time.
