Your tour guide awaits you at the agreed meeting point and you will make your way to your shore excursion in Klaipeda.
Discover an enchanting landscape between the mainland and the sea: Klaipeda is the third largest city in Lithuania and the most important port in the country. Founded in 1252 by Teutonic knights and German conquerors, the city has been under the rule of various powers since its creation. In its history, Klaipeda was known for the longest time under the German-Prussian name Memel. The city has become the main trade center for the entire Baltic region, especially because of its harbor, which remains ice-free almost all year round.
On today’s panoramic tour you will get to know the most interesting and historical sites of Klaipeda, which have survived to this day. These include the ruins of the Klaipeda castle from the 15th to the 19th century. For the first time, the castle was built in the 13th century by Teutonic Knights. Today you can enjoy a beautiful view of Klaipeda from there.
The walk takes you through the small network of charming streets of the Old Town that was built between the 13th and 15th century. You will also be able to admire some old department stores in the typical half-timbered style. From Theater Square – the main attraction of the Old Town, you will walk along the Craft Yard, which dates back to the 18th century, to Klaipeda University and the Central Post Office building.
Now the ferry will take you to the second destination of your excursion: the Neringa peninsula, also known as the “Curonian Spit”. This approximately 62mi long headland separates the mainland from the Baltic Sea. The northern half (approximately) belongs to Lithuania, the southern half to the Russian exclave Kaliningrad. There is a national park here, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its breathtaking scenic beauty. You will also be able to discover the largest dune in Europe on the Spit.
Of course, you will also make a visit to the well-known Hill of Witches. In the middle of the forest, you can find more than 70 wooden figures representing figures from fairytales and legends and appearing utterly mystic.
Afterwards, you continue to the small, pristine town of Preila. The ethnographic cemetery of Preila is worth a visit. Interesting funerary monuments are still preserved.
On your following walk in Nida, the capital of the peninsula, you will see the former summer house of the author Thomas Mann. Furthermore, you will visit a Museum of Baltic Amber, which houses a fantastic collection. Here you can see many plant and animal species preserved in amber 50 million years ago. You will be amazed by the different amber colors and shapes.
Located south from the city, you will climb the steps to reach the Parnidis dune. Up there a wonderful panoramic view on the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea awaits you.
After extensive nature experience, you will go back to your cruise ship in the afternoon.
We wish you an exciting excursion in Klaipeda!
