Tour description
Your tour guide will be waiting for you at the agreed meeting point and will take you on your shore excursion in Riga. Riga’s center boasts an incredible variety of architectural styles: Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Art Nouveau and National Romanticism.
You will explore the enchanting historic center of Riga on your today’s excursion on foot. The exceptionally well preserved cobbled streets and the medieval atmosphere give the charming backdrop to the beautiful homes of the rich merchants of the Hanseatic League.
You will begin our tour with a view of Riga Castle, built in 1330, one of the best preserved castles in Northern Europe. Further on, you pass parts of the old city wall and take a look at the Swedish Gate and the Powder Tower before you see the old nunnery and the Holy Spirit Hospital.
Some of the oldest buildings in the city are on your list, such as the House of the Three Brothers, the oldest residence in Riga, the House of the Blackheads, seat of the famous Brotherhood of Captains and Hanseatic merchants, and the later-built halls of children and adults Guilds that were the cultural center of artisans and traders. The most important religious buildings of the city are also on the program: Jacobi Church, St. John’s Church, St. Peter’s Church and Riga Cathedral. We will take a look at Riga Cathedral and St. Peter’s Church from the inside (except on Mondays). St. Peter’s Church is a beautiful gothic building from 1209. Fire damages caused by the bombardments during the Second World War has been carefully restored. Riga Cathedral, built in 1211 near the Daugava River (or “Duna”), is a Gothic masterpiece and the largest church of the three Baltic States.
You finish our Riga excursion at the old market square in front of the town hall, and together with your tour guide you will go back to your cruise ship.
This tour does not include a bus transfer from and to the ship. The cruise port is very central, so that the city is easily accessible.
We wish you a great shore excursion in Riga!
Please consider that the Riga Cathedral and the St. Peter’s Church are closed on Mondays and therefore can only be visited from outside on Mondays. Of course an adequate alternative will be organized for you to replace this part of the tour.
