Tour description

Your tour guide will be waiting for you at the agreed meeting point and will take you on your shore excursion in Helsinki.

Depending on the mooring in Helsinki, you can either take a short bus transfer to the city center, or walk straight to the harbor for your 3-hour walk. In the city center there is also the market square, where a typical food market takes place. There are mainly regional delicacies such as wild berries, mushrooms, sausages and smoked fish. Over the elegant Esplanadi Boulevard with its terraces, boutiques and cafes, you will cross the Alexander Street, the pedestrian area and one of the liveliest corners of Helsinki to finally reach one of the world’s most beautiful main train stations. It dates back to 1919 where it was built in granite in Art Nouveau / National Romantic style. Immediately adjacent you will find the Finnish National Theater and the Athenaeum, the largest art collection in Finland.

You follow the oldest streets in Helsinki and take a look at the stock market, which is also located in an Art Nouveau building. At the Senate Square, a statue of Tsar Alexander II, who always promoted the autonomy of the Finns, watches over an impressive, neo-classical ensemble of houses. Some of Helsinkis’ most famous buildings can be found here: the Senate Building or the Government Palace with the Prime Minister’s Office. The oldest building in Helsinki, Sederholm House from 1757, the National Library and the main building of the university are located on Senate Square. You visit the neoclassical cathedral there. It is the symbol of the city and one of the countless cultural highlights in Helsinki. It was built between 1830 and 1852 during a time when Finland belonged to the Russian Empire. Originally the cathedral in Helsinki bore the name of Tsar Nicholas I, who was personally involved in its construction and arranged for the statues of the twelve apostles to be placed on the roof. The cathedral blends harmoniously into the unique architectural ensemble on Senate Square.

You will pass the northern harbor bay and arrive at Katanajokka, where you‘ll see a surprising number of Art Nouveau buildings, including the Uspenski Cathedral. Uspenski Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Western Europe. It was built in 1868 from red bricks and is crowned by thirteen golden domes. From there you will have a wonderful view of Helsinki, its harbor and the Gulf of Finland.

After this extensive city tour you will go or ride (depending on your berth) back to your cruise ship. If a bus transfer is necessary due to your berth, your guide will stay in town at the end of the tour. Alternatively, you have the option of continuing your shore excursion in Helsinki on your own and returning to your ship independently.

We wish you an exciting shore excursion in Helsinki!
