Your tour guide will meet you at the agreed meeting point and will welcome you on your exciting shore excursion today in Stockholm.
Our short bus ride starts at a place called Fjällgatan – where we can get a good view of the city and the archipelago. The place is located in Stadsgården, an old harbor area that has recently been restored. Our tour will take you to some of the islands that make up the city and we will definitely enjoy beautiful views of Stockholm and the Baltic Sea. We will see the Concert hall, where the annual Nobel Award ceremony takes place. After that we will continue our tour to the elegant district of Ostermalm.
Most of Stockholm’s sights are in the Old town of Gamla Stan. It is a true pleasure to drift through this maze of narrow, cobbled streets and at the same time discover old houses as well as historic buildings. We will see the Swedish Parliament and the House of Nobility, Riddarhuset.
On the neighboring island you can find the Riddarholmen church from the 13th century, one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm and burial place of the Swedish kings. The impressive Town Hall is located at the top of Kungsholmen Island. Every year the banquet takes place in the Blue Hall on the occasion of the Nobel Prize Award ceremony. Back in Gamla Stan a visit to the Royal Palace or Kungliga Slottet, the official residence of the Royal Family is in our program. Afterwards we will visit the Cathedral of Stockholm, Storkyrkan. This cathedral is the oldest building in Stockholm and a magnificent example of Baltic Gothic or brick Gothic architecture.
In the afternoon we continue our shore excursion in Stockholm: on the island of Djurgården near the historic center of Stockholm, we will pay a visit to the Vasa Museum with the warship Vasa. Built at the beginning of the 17th century in a period of Swedish expansionism, Vasa was one of the largest and strongest ships of its time. As the flagship of the Swedish fleet, the Vasa was equipped with 64 guns and should have the ability to secure the Swedish supremacy on the Baltic Sea. Not only was its construction extremely expensive for the kingdom but also extremely tragic: due to some flaws in design, the Vasa sank on 10 August 1628, just shortly after leaving the harbor for its maiden voyage. For centuries being forgotten, the ship was recovered only 333 years later in a surprisingly good condition. Now the ship and the salvaged objects are on display for tourists in the museum.
Between our morning and afternoon program, we will have plenty of time for a light lunch or snack.
At the end of the tour, you’ll travel back to your cruise ship with your tour guide. Alternatively, you also have the opportunity to continue your shore excursion in Stockholm on your own and later return to the ship independently.
Please note that this excursion can only be offered to passengers, whose cruises are NOT mooring at the terminals Nynashamn or Kapellskar far from the city. Tell us the exact name of your cruise ship when booking.
