Your local guide will welcome you right at the pier of your cruise ship and then take you on your shore excursion in St. Petersburg.
This English-speaking guided tour is ideal to get to know both the historical significance as well as the modern lifestyle of this vibrant metropolis.
In the morning you will visit the impressive Blood church, built in the typical Russian style with colorful domes and golden onion domes, then ride along the famous Nevsky Prospect, St. Petersburg’s famous diagonal main street. You will pass the Peter and Paul Fortress on the north side of the Neva River.
You will stop at the legendary Russian cruiser Aurora, which initiated the Russian Revolution. After that, with some luck, you will see the Cabin of Peter the Great – it was this modest residence, from which he personally supervised the construction work in „his“ city from 1703 to 1708. On the Vasilyevsky Island we can see the Strelka (east tip), the Menchikov Palace and a historical building, which is part of the State University. You see the Admiralty (shipyard) with its imposing gilded dome – a symbol of the Russian navy, whose help Peter the Great wanted to build his empire on. His equestrian statue was erected in front of the Senate building and St. Isaac’s Cathedral with its impressive pillars of red Finnish granite. You will also visit St. Petersburg’s Conservatory and Mariinsky Theatre on Theatre Square.
Next you will visit the St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral. With a little luck, you have the opportunity to attend an Orthodox Mass.
St. Petersburg is rightly called the „Venice of the North“ because it was once built on the marshy area at the mouth of the Neva River. Due to this location, the architects had to design a large and complex system of channels for drainage: more than 100 channels with a total length of over 300 km (~186 miles) – a landmark of the city today.
You continue your tour in the afternoon with a boat trip through the canals. You will sail along the red granite dams and under some of the 350 bridges, each with its own story. Enjoy the views from the water. The most beautiful bridges are elaborately decorated with wrought-iron railings and sculptures.
After that your guide will take you back to your cruise ship. Between the morning and afternoon program, you will have plenty of time for a light lunch or a snack during this shore excursion in St. Petersburg.
Please note that the boat ride is always dependent on the weather and we may of course organize an adequate alternative for you for this part of the trip. If you also book this trip on Wednesday, the Blood Church is unfortunately not open and can only be viewed from outside.
Your entry permit to Russia and admissions to all the above-mentioned attractions are all included in your shore excursion in St. Petersburg!
