Useful information for a shore excursion in Mallorca
We have compiled information about the most beautiful sights, a map of the cruise ship terminal, as well as useful information for a shore excursion in and around Mallorca bellow.
The most beautiful sights in Mallorca
Mallorca has a lot more to offer than some people may think: The days have changed since Mallorca was only a destination for package tourists. There spectacular nature such as the Cordillera in the North of the peninsula of Firmentor, Caribbean beaches in Es Trenc. Or cultural treasures like the Catedral La Seu. This includes the unique flair of the island with their numerous villas and olive groves. Mallorca allows great cruise excursions!
Catdral La Seu
The Cathedral of Palma gives the city a distinctive silhouette. It is the seat of the Bishop of the island (in Catalan “la seu”). The construction of the foundation began in 1230, but it took until the 20th century before the work was completed. Therefore the Cathedral was designed in many different architectural style.
It is impressive even from the outside. A true marvel of church art awaits the visitor in the Interior of the Cathedral. The 110m (4,330ft) -long main nave is divided into 14 columns sections, each about 22m (866ft) high. Above the alter there is a beautiful, more than 1,200 piece rose window measuring 11.5m (0.45ft) diameter.
The Formentor peninsula lies in the North of Mallorca. Formentor can be reached by bus or car from Palma de Mallorca (about an hour and a half drive). The sharply jagged rock landscape extends significantly into the Mediterranean and creates especially light fantastic images in the evenings.
Gran Hotel / Art collection
The Gran Hotel was the first luxury hotel in Mallorca and is used today as a Museum for modern art (“Fundació la Caixa”). Its façade is decorated in the distinctive Catalan Art Nouveau and goes back to the early 20th century. A very trendy bar is included in the Interior of the old hotel. To find the hotel you would need to follow the “Passeig del born Avenue” from the Harbor to the North and turn right on the Carrer de la Unió. After approx. 820 ft it can be found on the left hand side.
Mallorca’s most beautiful, and most famous beach is the Es Trenc. It is approximately 3.1 miles of white sandy beach. The Caribbean feelings/ flairs in the Mediterranean are guaranteed here. Es Trenc can be reached from Palma de Mallorca by car in about an hour, just follow the MA-19 road in the south easterly direction. At Campos, turn onto the MA-6030 and then you reach the beach after 6.2 miles.
The pretty village of Valldemossa is located about a half-hour north of Palma de Mallorca and is known for the love story between Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, who lived here in the winter of 1838 / 39 for six weeks. The two lived at that time in the Charter house of Valldemossa, which today is a popular destination for Mallorca excursions. George Sand wrote the famous story of “A winter in Mallorca” after her stay on the island.
Serra de Tamuntana
The mountain range (“cordillera”) in the Northwest of the island impresses with its spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and a very winding panorama road. Tour guests can relax in their seat here, lean back and enjoy the nature. There are some beautiful small towns, like e.g. Sóller along the mountain road. You should schedule a short visit with any chance you have.
Cruise port in Palma de Mallorca
Because of its size and importance, the cruise port terminal of Palma de Mallorca is equipped with eight modern piers. They are all in the West section Estación maritima.
What you should know for cruise excursions in Mallorca
SHIPPING COMPANIES AND ROUTES
With approximately 1.5 million passengers yearly, Palma de Mallorca – just like Barcelona – is one of the most important and most popular cruise ship ports in the Western Mediterranean. Palma is called by almost all cruise lines like MSC Cruises and also by American cruise lines such as Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
For some ships Palma serves as a start and destination port. In this case a Mallorca shore excursion needs to be arranged before or after departure, but its nevertheless worthwhile. Make sure to allow plenty of time to get to the ship and to check-in, if you plan a cruise excursion before your cruise travel.
IMMIGRATION AND VISA
UK, Canadian and US citizens do not require a visa to enter the Schengen Area of countries in Europe for tourism or business stays under ninety (90) days. Some shipping companies will require a valid passport for cruises.
Please check the visa requirements with your cruise operator/cruise line before departure.
In Spain, the Euro is used as currency. A currency exchange is therefore required. (1 dollar = 0.86 euro and 1 pound = 1.11 euro)
The summer months especially during the holiday seasons are the classic time for cruise travel in the Western Mediterranean. Spring and Autumn are the mid-seasons in Mallorca, there are less visitors and more moderate temperatures in this period of the year. Therefore a cruise trip during this time is highly recommend.
Many shipping companies now offer year-round cruises in the Western Mediterranean. Thus you can also travel to Mallorca in the low session winter, although the weather can be quite cold and rainy.
