New York, the city that never sleeps, lies on the east coast of the United States and is definitely one of the most important cities in the world. The metropolis of New York is divided into five districts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens and Harlem. The city offers people from different cultures a beloved home. The metropolitan area of New York is also one of the most important economic areas in the world and home to many international companies and organizations such as the United Nations. With a colorful mix of historic sights, art, theater, culture and a vibrant nightlife, New York has something for everyone. Experience this fascinating city, which is also popularly known as the “Big Apple” .
Highlights from the Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is 10km long and starts from the Washington Square Park, to the height of 6th Street, and then through all of Midtown Manhattan, and is arguably the most famous and expensive shopping street in the world. From 49th to 50th Streets, you will find boutiques, shops and luxury stores. Fifth Avenue also forms the eastern boundary of Central Park and ends at Harlem on 142nd Street.
In addition, the road offers much more, e.g. the Museum Mile, which stretches between 82nd and 104th Streets. One of the most popular museums in the Museum Mile is The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is the largest art museum in the US and has the world’s most important art historical collections. Further afield, you will find other major attractions such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Flatiron Building or the New York Public Library.
The Empire State Building is a skyscraper and one of New York’s most popular attractions. The special feature of the building is the lighting: Every day, the top shines in a different color. From the observation deck on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, you can have a breathtaking view of the city that never sleeps.
The Rockefeller Center is located between 48th and 51st Streets in Midtown Manhattan and consists of a total of 19 buildings. On the top floor of the Comcast Building at Rockefeller Center is the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, which offers spectacular views of New York City with its skyscrapers and Central Park.
The 349-hectare large city park is located in the middle of Manhattan and is largely an artificial creation. Central Park, also known as the “Green Lung of New York”, extending across 4.07 km in length and 860 meters in width. It stretches from 59th to 110th Streets and is located between 5th and 8th Avenue. For several years, the inner-city park has also been largely closed to cars, so that Central Park can be used as a real retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. On 93.5 kilometers of footpaths, the park can be discovered on foot or by bicycle. Alternatively, you can ride completely relaxed with a carriage or a bicycle rickshaw through the park. Every year, around 25 million people visit the park: the source of inspiration is the green wonder in the middle of the megacity.
Central Park has many lakes and a variety of attractions and activities. This changes between summer and winter – so you can in the summer, for example, participate in concerts and cultural events at the park and skate in winter on the Wollman Rink, for example. Attractions in the park include the Belvedere Castle, the Bethesda Terrace with its fountain, the Egyptian Obelisk, the Central Park Zoo and the Strawberry Fields Memorial.
The theater district par excellence is located between Manhattan’s 41st and 53rd Streets. Here are some 40 major theaters, including the Metropolitan Opera. Times Square is not only the center of New York, but also of Broadway.
The sparkling and glowing billboards on every Times Square building provide an overwhelming picture, especially in the evenings. Every day disguised as Disney characters or other celebrities run around people who want to take a photo with you for a little tip. With a some luck, you might discover the “Naked Cowboy” with his guitar.
In addition to the many theaters, Times Square is home to cafes, fast food chains, gift shops, fashion stores, upscale restaurants, multiplex cinemas, MTV studios, the Hard Rock Cafe and more.
Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty stands on the Liberty Island in the New York Harbor and was a gift from the French to the United States and represents the figure of Libertas – the Roman goddess of freedom. The statue was inaugurated on October 28, 1886, since 1924, a part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. It has a height of 46 meters and a total height of almost 93 meters. The Statue of Liberty is one of New York’s best-known landmarks.
The entrance to the island is free, however, all visitors are dependent on the paid use of the ferries to reach Liberty Island. Visitors who want to enter the base of the statue must be in possession of an additional ticket. Inside the pedestal, there is a small museum and observation deck, with views of the Manhattan skyline. However, if you want to get into the crown, you have to purchase tickets many months in advance on the Internet. The number of tickets is very limited.
Ellis Island is also part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and has been open to the public since 1990 as a museum on the history of immigration to the United States.
Alternatively, to get a great view of the Statue of Liberty without having to dock on the island, you can take a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry, which will take you close to the island.
One World Trade Center with 9/11 Memorial
At over 541 meters, the One World Trade Center is the city’s tallest skyscraper. The One World Trade Center stands right next to the site where the Twin Towers used to be destroyed by the 2001 terrorist attacks. The building has offices, restaurants, a shopping mall and the One World Observatory. This is located on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors and is currently New York’s highest observation deck. A visit to the observation deck is a literally outstanding experience and the great views will inspire you.
The 9/11 Memorial, built to commemorate the victims of the 9/11 attack, consists of two large square water basins. These are located exactly on the ground Zero, where the Twin Towers used to stand. The names of the many victims were engraved on bronze plates, which are located around the two basins. Next door is also the 9/11 Memorial Museum, where the history of the attacks is vividly displayed on 7 floors underground.
In the southeastern part of Manhattan is the so-called “Financial District”. It houses the world’s largest securities exchange, the New York Stock Exchange and the offices of numerous financial companies, credit institutions and law firms. The most famous street in this district is without a doubt Wall Street. The 1.1-km-long street is the heart of New York’s financial district. At the end of the street is the famous Trinity Church.
A special attraction for tourists is the Wall Street Bull located here. The famous sculpture with the official name “Charging Bull” was erected by sculptor Arturo Di Modica after the stock market crash in 1987. The bull weighing over 3 tons quickly became a popular symbol of Wall Street.
The multicultural Brooklyn is New York’s largest city and is divided into many different neighborhoods such as Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights or Dumbo. There’s a lot to discover in Brooklyn: the trendy boutiques and restaurants in Williamsburg, the picturesque brownstone houses in Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and Cobble Hill all the way to the new Brooklyn Bridge Park on the waterfront with a fantastic view of the skyline. All these are now among the sights that must have seen as an interested visitor to New York. Worth knowing about shore excursions in New York
Shipping Companies and Routes
New York is one of the major cruise ports in North America. Many cruises start or end and offer routes to the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Canada. Particularly popular are the transatlantic cruises from Hamburg to New York.
At present, we can only offer shore excursions if your ship moored on one of the berths at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. The following shipping companies usually dock at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal: AIDA Cruises, MSC, P & O, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Phoenix, Oceania, Azamara, Silver Sea, Seven Seas.
Entry and Visa
German citizens need a valid passport and a valid electronic entry permit (ESTA) to enter the US. The ESTA application costs about $ 14 and must be requested online prior to travel. If you only have a temporary passport, you will need a visa.
If New York is the first American port on your cruise and you arrive by sea, the so-called “Facecheck“, a security check by the US border authorities, will take place before you enter the mainland. The procedure and the duration may vary depending on the shipping company.
As a precautionary measure, we generally recommend that you check all valid entry requirements directly with your cruise line shipping company and the Foreign Office before your cruise.
The currency of the USA is the US dollar (USD). In the US, almost all credit cards are accepted and are therefore almost indispensable. With your credit card, you can easily withdraw cash from an ATM. Alternatively, you can exchange money in advance or use one of the exchange offices, but you will have to pay fees.
Taxi and Public Transport
In the Big Apple, public transport is well-developed and takes you to every corner of the city.
The yellow taxis are by default the cityscape of Manhattan. They are a good option to commute from point A to B, especially at night. During the day, it requires more time to commute a short distance, as there is often a lot of traffic, especially during the rush hour. The taxis all use a taxi meter and you can easily pay for a taxi service with a card.
You also have cheaper options if you do not want to drive with the yellow taxis, a secret landmark of New York. These options are more customer-friendly and transparent. So, you can order your driver right outside the door, know the price and the travel duration in advance. This simply works with the Taxi Driving Service Apps in New York City. Uber is probably the most famous, Lyft, Juno and Via are the other competitors.
The New York Underground (MTA New York City Subway) is one of the oldest subway systems in the world. The subway network in New York is very developed, efficient and reliable for many lines around the clock. The subway is the busiest transportation in New York and has a total of 24 different routes. The prices for tickets are much cheaper compared to Germany: for just 2.75 US dollars you can drive to any part of the Big Apple. The fastest way to get to your destination is by subway.
Alternatively, you can also use the well-developed bus network in New York. The buses are a good choice for people with difficulties climbing stairs and for those who like to have a view while driving. However, you may have to exercise patience, as the buses are often stuck in the stagnant flow of traffic along the main roads and even shorter routes. The prices for the buses are just as cheap as for the subway.
The best time to travel to New York is generally in the spring and fall. The months of April, May, September and October, offers a particularly pleasant temperature. In autumn is the so-called ”Indian Summer”, where nature shines in colorful and glorious forms.
European shipping companies usually drive to New York in the fall before concentrating on the Caribbean. AIDA Cruises usually goes to New York Harbor from August to November.
The international shipping companies, however, offer New York all year round.
