Useful information for your excursions in Livorno
You can find all information you need about the most beautiful sights, cruise port and other useful information for your cruise excursions in Livorno below.
Most famous and beautiful tourist attractions in and around Livorno
Livorno is a popular stop on many Mediterranean routes as you can explore several interesting cities in central Italy from here. Livorno itself also has some attractions to offer. A day trip to the inland is normally preferable in our opinion.
Florence is about 1 hour drive from Livorno to the east direction and offers everything you need for an unforgettable cruise shore excursion. Starting with numerous palaces, churches, museums and art galleries, to extensive shopping experiences in the luxury boutiques of Via Tornabuoni or diverse culinary highlights and sanctuaries like the Giardini di Boboli and Bardini. This city offers literally everything to every taste and is definitely a perfect one-day shore excursion from Livorno.
Siena is another 1 hour south of Florence. From Livorno, you’ll need about two hours to drive there.
In some way, Florence and Siena have much in common: both cities convey similar feelings and are similar in the cityscape. Both offer culture in abundance, cozy trattorias and restaurants. Yet Siena is altogether more contemplative but by no means as popular as her “big sister” to the north.
If you are planning a more leisure shore excursion during high season then Siena is an ideal destination for an excursion from Livorno.
Pisa is much closer to the Mediterranean coast than Florence or Siena and can be reached from Livorno in less than half an hour. Therefore you can also explore Pisa as part of a half-day excursion.
In addition to the landmark, the famous leaning clock tower, Pisa also offers some more sights, including one of the most spectacular cathedral buildings in Italy. Of course, you will also experience the typical lifestyle of central Italy here, as well as in Florence or Siena. So if you’re planning a Livorno excursion to experience “Bella Italia”, then a quick trip to Pisa is all it takes to save time and get more out of the city.
Excursion to Chianti’s wine-growing areas
The traditional wine-growing area of Chianti lies between Florence and Siena. The famous red wine is made from these Sangiovese grape and previously well-known for its enclosed bottle in a straw basket, however quite rare to see today.
Excursions can be organized in almost every wineries, often also include wine tasting and gastronomic offer. For the real taste of Italy, this is just the right choice for a cruise trip from Livorno.
Excursion to “Cinque Terre”
The “Cinque Terre” refers to a coastal strip about 100km (62 miles) north from Livorno. It includes the villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Due to their unique topography, their spectacular construction directly on the steep cliffs and their original appearance, Cinque Terre was entitled a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
The bays and villages can be explored both by water as well as by land. A sailing trip beneath the villages is an unforgettable experience. If theses exciting activities are not available when you visit, it is already an extremely remarkable cruise excursion to Cinque Terre for your trip.
Map of cruise port in Livorno
Passenger numbers in Livorno have declined in recent years. Thanks to the newly opened terminal “Alto Fondale” in 2013, the cruise port has now the sufficient capacity to serve the large number of annual passengers
Your cruise ship will dock at one of the piers listed on the map below. From there it is not too far to the terminal buildings, which are mostly equipped with restaurants, shops, internet, etc.
Things to know about your excursions in and around Livorno
Shipping companies and routes
The port of Livorno welcomes around 700,000 cruise passengers every year. In some cases, the shipping companies use Livorno as their home port on their routes. There are also numerous lines that have stopovers in Livorno, e.g. Royal Caribbean, MSC, Princess, P&O, Cunard.
Immigration and visa
U.S. citizens may enter Italy for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. For more accurate information about the entry requirements please contact your cruise operator before the trip.
Taxi and other public transports
Taxis are usually found outside the cruise ship terminals, with which you can travel to Livorno central station (“Livorno Centrale”) which is 3 km (1.8 miles) away. Depending on which terminal you dock, you can take bus lines 5 and 1. However, this is primarily used for the terminals “Deposito Franco” and “Calata Carrara” as they are within walking distance of the bus station “Trinit Stazzione Maritime”.
From the central station in Livorno there are regional trains to Florence (every 30 minutes, about 10EUR/trip) and to Pisa (every 15 minutes, from 2.50 EUR/ticket).
Livorno is a region in Italy, where Euro is used (1 dollar = 0.86 euro and 1 pound = 1.11 euro). At ATMs you can conveniently withdraw money. Please note that charges may apply.
The western Mediterranean destination welcomes more and more shipping companies all year-round. Central Italy and Tuscany can be particularly enjoyable for an excursion in spring or late summer/fall. Especially in the midsummer months of July and August, all tourist destinations in Italy are often extremely overcrowded. This time period is namely the central holiday season of not only Italy but also of many other European countries.
In addition, natural impressions in spring such as olive blossoms in Tuscany often seem even more beautiful than they already are. In autumn, the gentle landscape is often beautiful in late summer light.
Our recommendation: if you have time to take a cruise in periods of the year other than the high season, it is best to choose a trip in May or early June, or from mid-September to mid-October.
