Useful information for your excursions in La Spezia

We have listed below all useful information about the most beautiful attractions, cruise port at La Spezia and other tips for your cruise excursions.

The most famous attractions in and around La Spezia

This port city is the capital of the province of La Spezia, right at the head of Gulf of La Spezia to the south of Northern Italy. This location has always offered this city the best conditions as a maritime site. In the 20th century, La Spezia’s port is also increasingly popular for freight and passenger traffic.

Excursion to “Cinque Terre”

The “Cinque Terre” refers to a coastal strip to the west of La Spezia. It includes the villages of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Due to their unique topography, their spectacular construction directly on the steep cliffs and their original appearance, Cinque Terre was entitled a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The bays and villages can be explored both by water as well as by land. A sailing trip beneath the villages is an unforgettable experience. If theses exciting activities are not available when you visit, it is already an extremely remarkable cruise excursion to Cinque Terre for your trip

Explore the beautiful Florence

Florence is about 2 hours from La Spezia to the south-east direction and offers everything you need for an unforgettable land excursion. Starting with numerous palaces, churches, museums and art galleries, to extensive shopping experiences in the luxury boutiques of Via Tornabuoni or diverse culinary highlights and the sanctuaries like the Giardini di Boboli and Bardini. This city offers literally everything to every taste and surely a perfect one-day excursion from La Spezia.

Visit to the world-famous Pisa

Pisa is much closer to the Mediterranean coast than Florence and can be reached from La Spezia in just over an hour.

In addition to the famous leaning landmark, Pisa also offers some other beautiful sights, including one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy. Of course you can experience the typical lifestyle of central Italy here as well. Let yourself wander through the countless narrow streets and discover the unknown corners of Pisa.

City tours in La Spezia

If you only want to get off the boat for half a day, take a stroll right through La Spezia. The city may not be one of the most beautiful in Italy: heavy destruction in the First and Second World War has required to build numerous new buildings in the post-war years.

But there are alo some interesting archeology and art museums. In the modern, young district of Prione, lots of new restaurants have been opened in recent years. At the port of Porto Lotti you can marvel at the fine yachts of Italian nobilities.

Map of cruise port in La Spezia

The cruise terminal of La Spezia (“Moro Garibaldi”) was rebuilt in recent years. It is located in the south and within walking distance of the city center.

The pier has a total length of 450m (1,476 ft). That sounds like a lot, but it’s not enough to guarantee a berth for all cruise ships in summer. You might well be brought ashore by tenders because of the lack of berths.

Travel time

The western Mediterranean destination welcomes more and more shipping companies all year-round. Central Italy and Tuscany, however, can be particularly comfortable for an excursion in spring or late summer/fall. Especially in the midsummer months of July and August, all tourist destinations in Italy are often extremely overcrowded. This time period is namely the central holiday season of not only Italy but also of many other European countries.

In addition, natural impressions in spring such as olive blossoms in Tuscany often seem even more beautiful than they already are. In autumn, the gentle landscape is often beautiful in late summer light.

Our recommendation: if you have time to take a cruise in periods of the year other than the high season, it is best to choose a trip in May or early June, or from mid-September to mid-October.
