Useful information for a shore excursion in La Palma

We have put together information about the cruise port, the most beautiful sights and many useful information for a shore excursion in La Palma.

The most beautiful sights in La Palma

La Palma is a hiking and nature paradise. The often changeable weather and the generally precipitation-rich climate may disturb some visitors. But they are the prerequisite for the overwhelming flora (and fauna) of the island, which make a discovery tour in La Palma a real experience. and yet another advantage of these weather conditions: La Palma has still remained spared from mass tourism.

Caldera de Taburiente

Probably the most spectacular part of La Palma is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park in the middle of the island. Here you will find, among other things, the highest elevation in La Palma, the almost 8,202 ft high “Roque de los Muchachos“. Here the interested visitor can visit an astronomical observatory. The starry sky above the Roque is also an unforgettable experience with the naked eye (assuming the sky is not cloudy). The caldera is – like the entire island – of volcanic origin. Eruptions more than 1 million years ago caused the mountain range, but it was its collapse about 500,000 years ago that gave it its characteristic, open-flank profile to the west.

The park is about 40 minutes by car from the port in Santa Cruz. For a long hike through the National Park, you should allow four hours minimum.

Los Volcanes de Teneguía

In the south of the island lies the natural monument Los Volcanes de Teneguía. The 857-acre parking area covers virtually the entire southern tip of the heart-shaped island of La Palma.

Within the park, there is the San Antonio volcano which is 2,155 ft high. This is a “viable” alternative to the Roque de los Muchachos, which can also be climbed on the cruise excursion.

Also in the park are the salt pans of Fuencaliente, where sea salt from the Atlantic is extracted. The salt pans also provide habitat for a number of endangered and protected species of birds.

Santa Cruz de la Palma

Many small and old cities in the Canary Islands invite you to stroll and shop, but are often very crowded especially in the high season.

In Santa Cruz de la Palma on the other hand you still have a good chance of experiencing the traditional life of the local people. The old town of Santa Cruz de la Palma is one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean and has been declared a cultural-historical monument. A shore excursion to La Palma does not always have to be about the overwhelming nature of the island. You can also spend a good half day in the city.

Worthwhile destinations and landmarks are the Plaza de España with the renaissance-style Church of the Redeemer.

Map of the cruise port in Santa Cruz de la Palma

The capital Santa Cruz de la Palma is located in the east of the island and is therefore within easy reach of a Canary Islands cruise. Its harbor is one of the most beautiful in the archipelago and lies just south of the city center.

The cruise terminal of La Palma has a total of three moorings for cruise ships. Most of the larger ships are located on the eastern quay opposite the city.

Worth knowing for shore excursions in La Palma

Shipping companies and routes

La Palma is an integral part of many Canary Islands cruises. However, not every cruise ship will call at the port of La Palma. Often the stops alternate between La Palma and other Canary Islands such as La Gomera. Cruise lines that call at La Palma are P&O, Royal Caribbean or MSC Cruises for instance.

The Canary Islands are a typical winter region for European shipping companies. If you are a long way to the Caribbean or to Asia, there are plenty of offers for cruises in the Canary Islands during the winter months.

Entry and visa

The Canary Islands are part of the Schengen area and belong to the EU. Canadian, US citizens and UK citizens do not require a visa to enter the schengen area of countries in Europe for tourism business stays under ninety (90) days.

Note: Some routes (such as Marella Cruises) also call at ports outside the EU (e.g. Morocco). The same applies if you call the Canary Islands as part of a journey from Europe to America or the Caribbean. Therefore, you should inform yourself in good time before the start of your cruise at your shipping company about the exact entry requirements.

Taxi and public transport

The main means of transport on La Palma is the “Guagua“, a bus that connects all major towns. The Guagua runs every hour of the day and starts at the Plaza de la Constitución in Santa Cruz Palma (near the post office).

Taxis are also available but scarce in the evenings. If you want to explore the island on your own, consider a rental car.

Currency

On La Palma, the euro is used as currency. A currency exchange is therefore required (1 dollar = 0.86 euro and 1 pound = 1.11 euro).

If you need cash, there are some ATMs in the capital. In rural areas, the density of ATM or cash machines are significantly lower.

Travel time

Although known as a winter destination, the Canary Islands have become a year-round destination for cruise liners.

However, be aware of the fact that the winter months in La Palma can be much more humid than in Fuerteventura or Tenerife. But the average temperatures are over 20° Celcius or 68° Fahrenheit in January and February.

A good compromise is the mid season. If you book a trip at the end of September, you will still be able to enjoy summery temperatures in La Palma. At the same time peak season is over and the already low number of visitors will decrease once more.
