Below we have compiled information about the most beautiful sights, cruise ports and many useful information for shore excursions in La Gomera.
The most beautiful sights in La Gomera
Due to the sheer “size” of La Gomera you might think that there is not much to see on the second smallest Canary Island. Far from it, because it is just the compact size in combination with the great diversity of nature that makes the charm of La Gomera. We have compiled some highlights below:
Stroll through San Sebastián
The capital San Sebastián is one of the most beautiful Canarian cities ever.
Let yourself drift away and experience the cozy city life up close. With its beautiful patrician houses, San Sebastián gives the impression of a small colonial town. Also an interesting place to visit is the old customs house, where Christopher Columbus filled up on supplies on his passage to America.
Also worthwhile is a visit to the church “Nuestra Senora de la Asunción“, which was built before the complete conquest of La Gomera by the Spaniards in the 15th century.
Parque Nacionál de Garajonay
A visit to Garajonay National Park is like traveling back in time. Garajonay is the absolute natural highlight on a shore excursion to La Gomera.
The park is known for its pristine and evergreen “cloud forest” and the overwhelming number of tropical trees, ferns and mosses. In addition on that, you can find a remarkable fauna of birds and lizards here.
The park is located about 8 miles west of San Sebastián, exactly in the middle of La Gomera. It can be reached in about 30 minutes on the main road GM1 from the capital.
El Sabinar
Those who prefer it barren, rugged and windy, but also with a spectacular view should take a trip to El Sabinar on the neighboring island of El Hierro. The permanent and sometimes very strong wind has allowed the juniper trees of El Sabinar to grow in bizarre shapes. The view towards the Atlantic Ocean with the gnarled trees is a great photo opportunity.
Excursions to El Sabinar are quite expensive.
Map of the cruise port in San Sebastián
The cruise port of San Sebastián, the capital of La Gomera, is located on the east coast of the nearly circular island.
There are three berths for larger cruise ships, all located at the Breakwater pier. After leaving your ship it is only a few meters to the northern end of the piers and to the terminal building. At the marina, the sports harbor, it is again only a few steps to the center of San Sebastián.
La Gomera
What you should know before your cruise excursion in and aroundShipping companies and routes
La Gomera has a rather low mooring capacity, therefore it is only occasionally used by major shipping companies, mostly in the program of 10- or 14-day Canary Cruises.
Immigration and visa
The Canary Islands belongs to Spain and thus to the Schengen area and the EU. Canadian and US citizens do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area of countries in Europe for tourism or business stays under ninety (90) days.
Please make sure to bring a valid passport with you, which extends at least 90 days after your initial arrival in the Schengen area.
If in doubt, it is advisable to find out about the specific entry requirements of your route at your cruise line. Especially if you booked a two-week trip incl. Cape Verde or Morocco, you will need a valid passport.
Taxi and public transport
You can do a city tour without taxis or buses. The central location of the terminal makes it possible.
The central station is located on the Avenida del y Centenario which can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot to Paseo Fred Olsen, which leads out of the harbor area.
For trips on land, to the “Guaguas“, there are buses on La Gomera, which connect all major municipalities. You can find taxis immediately at the exit of the port.
Currency
Euro is used in Spain as well as on these Spanish Canary islands. (1 dollar = 0.86 euro and 1 pound = 1.11 euro)
Travel time
The Canaries have become a year-round destination for the cruise lines. This is especially due to the year-round mild and dry climate that characterizes the archipelago. It can get hotter midsummer.
If you can switch to the mid season March to May or October to November. The prices are often much cheaper and the weather is more pleasant than in the high season.
Even in the winter months of December to February you can experience very stable weather and mild temperatures on the Canary Islands cruise. However, there may already be some raindrops.
