The most beautiful sights in and around Khasab
Khasab is the capital of the governorate of Musandam in Oman and is located on the Strait of Hormuz. The modern Omani oasis City forms the northern tip of the Arabian Peninsula and is the commercial center of the region.
The small village has only about 17,000 inhabitants and is not very rich in attractions. The landscapes in the vicinity of Khasab are even more spectacular.
Boat trips and tours
Due to its fjord-like bays and their steep towering walls of rock, Khasab is called the Omani Norway.
Boat trips in and around Khasab are done with traditional dhows. This particular type of boat, with its huge trapeze sails, is common in all the neighboring states of the Indian Ocean. Just a mere sight of it will give you a feeling as if you were in one of the Arabian nights. There is also a very good chance that you will see dolphins on the ride.
During such a cruise you can admire the beautiful sights like the 9.9 mi long fjord Khorsham, small villages or the Telegraph Island, which was named after a British-built telegraph station in 1864. The island is surrounded by a coral reef and therefore ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
Safari Tour
There’s no better way to explore the spectacular hinterland of Khasab than ridding a jeep through mountains and valleys to steep drop-offs.
There is little vegetation around the 868 ft high mountain Jebel Harim, the “mountain of the women”. This place however, shouldn’t be included in any tours.
Other possible highlights on your route are the Shaykh plateau and the many small villages in the region such as Wadi Sal Al A’la and Khor Najd. Many people often visit one of the largest lagoons in the whole Musandam, Khwr Najd, where you enjoy a breathtaking view of the sea and the mountains.
Wadi Qadah
A road leads from Khasab to the village of Tawi, where the most significant archaeological site Wadi Qadah is located. On the cliffs prehistoric drawings of boats, animals and fighters can be admired. According to experts, these are well over 2,000 years old.
Fortress Caçapo
Those who are more interested in the history of Oman, Musandam and Khasab should visit the fortress of Caçapo. It has existed since the 15th century and dates back to the conquest voyages of the Portuguese. There is also a museum that tells the exciting stories from the time of the Conquistador.
