Useful information for shore excursions in Honningsvåg (North Cape)

Information about the cruise port, the most beautiful sights as well as many useful information for a shore excursion in and around Honningsvåg are listed below.

The most beautiful attractions in Honningsvåg

Honningsvåg is located on the island of Magerøya in northern Norway, which belongs to the province of Finnmark. With about 2,800 inhabitants, Honningsvåg is not only the capital of the municipality North Cape, but also the largest of the whole island. With a distance of about 40 km/ 25 mi to the North Cape, Honningsvåg is conveniently located for many cruise ships that call at North Cape in the summer months.

Honningsvåg is still one of the most important fishing settlements on the island of Magerøya. Together with tourism, fisheries continue to be the main source of income for the community. Over time, the small fishing village developed into an urban settlement.

At the end of the Second World War, Honningsvåg was almost completely destroyed by the German Armed Forces as part of Operation Nordlicht (1944 – 45). Only the church and the funeral chapel of Honningsvåg remained largely intact. The first inhabitants returned to Honningsvåg in June 1945 and rebuilt the city to a large extent.

Nowadays, cruise ship traffic to the North Cape is increasing and hence making Honningsvåg a major port for cruise ships on the Northern Route.

Worth seeing are the North Cape, Honningsvåg Church and Gjesværstappan. However, the city center of Honningsvåg itself invites you for a leisurely stroll through typical Norwegian shops.

North Cape

After arriving in North Cape, the only thing that separates you from the North Pole is Spitsbergen. Known as the northernmost point in Europe, it is the destination of many world travelers. Due to its unique location, the North Cape is one of the places from which you can best see the Northern Lights (in winter).

Especially on the hunt for the midnight sun, you should go to the North Cape. Experience the midnight sun when the night in summer has a holiday because between mid-May and late July, the sun never sets. When the midnight sun reaches its lowest level, there is hardly a more fascinating place in the north. An absolute must is therefore the visit of the imposing Nordkaplateaus in the evening. With over 300 m/ 984 ft of steep cliffs, it offers spectacular views across the expanse of the Northern Sea. When the weather is good, take a picture of the impressive midnight sun in the sky over the northern tip of Europe.

The visitor center on the North Cape is known as the North Cape Hall (Nordkapphallen) and offers various exhibitions for visitors throughout the year. Among other things, it shows what life looks like in such far north-facing climes. There is also a small cinema in the basement of the Hall. The film takes the visitors on a journey through the four seasons of the North Cape, through a fascinating landscape full of contrasts and light.

Moreover, there is also a small restaurant with an integrated café where visitors can escape the icy winds of the Barents Sea.

Honningsvåg Church

The church in Honningsvåg is one of the few buildings in Honningsvåg that was not destroyed during the German force attack on Norway. It is definitely worth a visit.

Gjesværstappan lies to the west of the Northern Cape and is one of the largest bird cliffs in Norway. Here you can marvel at a variety of different bird species. About 1 million puffins are native to the Gjesværstappan, along with gannets, cormorants and North Atlantic fulmars.

Map of the cruise port in Honningsvåg

In the harbor of Honningsvåg there are several possible berths for cruise ships. Most cruise ships are located on Quay 3 or Quay North. If all berths are occupied, some cruise ships anchor and bring you ashore with tenders. If you arrive with a smaller cruise ship, you may find yourself mooring in the village Skarsvåg on the north side of the island Magerøya. This applies, for example, to ships from Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.

Travel time

Honningsvåg and the North Cape are gladly toured during the time of the “light winters“. This is the time between March and early May. In March, the temperatures are still below zero, but with a bit of luck you can see the northern lights and hours of sunrises or sunsets. From April it gets warmer and the light gets brighter, so it is always bright around the clock. This is the most popular time for winter tours such as: dog sledding or snowmobile tours.

In spring, landing craft of the Norwegian army bring about 3,800 reindeers to their summer pastures on the island of Magerøy. In mid-May, the snow begins to melt and you can marvel at the midnight sun.Until mid-June, Honningsvåg has an off-season. There are fewer tourists because there is not enough snow for winter tours. In the summer months you will have the chance to encounter the indigenous population of the Sami people. From July to September the weather is ideal for trekking as most of the snow is gone and the temperature rises to 8 °C/ 46 °F. In October and the following months the days will be shorter and it will be cold and stormy.

From November to April, the cruise liners barely call at the fjords as it is often very cold during this time. Rainfall, however, can occur all year round.
