Useful information for your shore excursions in and around Halong Bay

Below you will find all useful information about the most beautiful tourist sights, a map of the cruise port as well as other tips for the best shore excursion in and around Halong Bay.

The most beautiful attractions in Halong Bay

The Bay of the famous James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies” is an absolute dream destination and this cruise port Halong Bay will bring you closer to it. It is the starting point for the highlight of Vietnam: the spectacular Halong Bay. This breathtakingly beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in the Gulf of Tonkin and impresses, among other things, through its picturesque landscape of rocks and islands rising above the water. Moreover, it is also in the neighborhood of the capital city of Vietnam, Hanoi. Just under 2 hours away from the port, you will immediately find lots of other sights and countless restaurants, bars and cafes.

Halong Bay

The approximately 1,500 km² (370,658 acres) area in the Gulf of Tonkin is characterized by nearly 2,000 limestone rocks of immense height which protrude from water.

You will find grottos and caves in which there are incomparable mineral formations and fascinating vegetations as well as small beautiful beaches. This magical area holds many legends that have long since disappeared on the mainland from the minds of the people. Among other things, it is said that a dragon created Halong Bay. It may therefore be translated as “The Bay of the Descending Dragon”.

The exploration of the rock area from the boat is also very impressive. On the way there, you can enjoy the unforgettable view of rock formations that rise hundreds of meters in height. Explore the interior of the caves and make a detour to various mini beaches.

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island is the largest island in Halong Bay and is also a great strarting point for a boat tour through the bay. This alternative is suitable for a shore excursion on your own. There are a lot of things to discover on the island. Among other things, you will find a spectacular National Park with jungle-like landscapes and an incredible vantage point over the island. Beautiful beaches adorn Cat Ba island as well; many other activities await active tourist at the harbour!

Bai Chay

In the coastal town of Bai Chay you will find the nearest beach to the cruise port with its 100m-long (328ft) sandbank. There is a variety of watersport offers here like jetskiing or canoeing, surfing and much more. Moreover, you can also find a lot of seafood restaurants to enjoy delicious treasures from the sea. If you are interested, you could stroll through the traditional markets and buy goods such as clothes, jewelries, etc. Halong night market for example, open everyday from 06:00 PM – 10:30 PM.

Luxury meets modesty – a city of the opposites. If you want to experience the Vietnamese flairs to the fullest, visit the capital city Hanoi which is only a 2-hour drive from Cai Lan. Even though it is not the liveliest city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh still tops, it is also very hectic here! Traffic is an attraction in its own right – mopeds criss-crossing in different directions is an unforgettable part of the cityscape and also the culture. Of course, this also includes street food which awaits you on every corner with numerous stalls. There are also countless cafes, restaurants and bars.

One of the most interesting places in Hanoi is the Old Town – or rather: the district of the 36 lanes. The story behind the name is also part of the story behind Hanoi. In this neighborhood, you may notice that many shopkeepers sell the same goods side by side. The reason for this is a regulation stating that only one type of product could be sold on one particular street. The street names were then named according to the product sold there: shoe row or spice row. Today, this rule is no longer valid, but many dealers maintain the tradition of their ancestors.

Worthwhile is also a trip to both Ho Chi Minh Museum and the mausoleum. The latter is completely free. For those seeking relaxation, Hoan Kiem Lake is a popular place that attracts locals and tourists all together. You will reach this on the way to the French Quarter, which you should absolutely take a look at. Here you will find another world within Hanoi: times when Vietnam was a French colony are still noticeable.

Map of the cruise port Halong Bay

The newly built cruise terminal of Halong is located in the Halong Bay. It is the first port in Vietnam, where all cruise ships can dock from around the world. The port has 6 docking stations, from which 4 docking stations are used by the cruise ships. The new port is situated in the heart of Bay Chai. It offers amenities like a duty-free area, a supermarket and souvenir shops inside the terminal building.

The alternative port in Cai Lan is also rather small like Da Nang or Nha Trang. It is located in the wonderful bay of Halong Bay. Ships dock here at the small pier so that their passengers can marvel at the breathtaking area of 2,000 rocks protruding from water. Your ship could also anchor offshore and you will be brought ashore with tenderboats.

Things to know about shore excursions in Halong Bay

Shipping companies and routes

In order to discover exciting highlights in the north of Vietnam, cruise ships from major shipping companies like Costa, NCL and Princess cruise lines are calling at Halong Bay port on their Asian routes.

Immigration and visa

US-citizens and UK-citizens must apply for a visa before visiting Vietnam by sea. Your passport must be valid for six months beyond your planned stay, and you must have at least one blank visa page. Visit the Embassy of Vietnam website for the most current information.

For more accurate information please contact your cruise operator before your cruise to Vietnam.

Vietnam Dong (VND) is the national currency of Vietnam. (1 dollar = 23,300 VND; 1 pound = 30,633 VND). You can exchange your cash in advance or use ATMs to withdraw money for your expense.

Taxi and other public transports

If you take a taxi in Vietnam, you should be careful to ride only taxis from well-known companies. This is especially important in Hanoi. The green and white taxis (Mai Linh taxi) are reliable there. You have to exchange into Vietnamese Dong before a taxi ride. The billing is done by taximeter, so it usually turns out to be difficult to negotiate the price.

An alternative to taxi is the bus. Rides are very cheap here, from around 20 ct. to one dollar. Another possibility is Grab, whose prices are similar to those of the taxis. However, you can only use this service with its app.

Travel time

In northern Vietnam, winter is dry and mild from November to April. The maximum temperatures are 20 to 22 °C / 68 to 71 °F. In May, the wet and rainy season begins slowly, lasting until October, with temperatures reaching up to 33 °C / 91 °F. There is also a risk of typhoons in September and October.

The best travel time for cruises is therefore from November to April, as the dry season has the best weather conditions. Rainfall is low and it is not too hot. The months of November, March and April are still the warmest, however, the number of rainy days is higher.
