Useful information for a shore excursion in Doha
We have compiled information about the most beautiful attractions and the cruise port, as well as many useful information for a shore excursion in and around Doha below.
The most beautiful sights in Doha
Doha is the capital of the Gulf State of Qatar, located on a peninsula between the states of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Doha is located on the east coast of the peninsula, directly on the Persian Gulf. The Emirate of Qatar is considered to be the richest country in the world and in recent years has developed into one of the most important economic and tourist centres in the Gulf region. While in the past the country lived mainly from the pearl industry, it later gained great popularity due to its large oil and gas deposits. In total, the state is less than 12,000 km² in size, but in recent years the population has grown considerably so that more than 2.7 million people now live there. In Doha itself, the population consists of about 600,000 inhabitants. Due to the hot, subtropical climate, the landscape around the city is mostly barren and dry. However, the country offers a lot of culture and adventure. Note that Qatar is a Muslim country, which is why the weekend here falls on Friday and Saturday and Sunday is a normal working day. Discover the impressive city directly on the Persian Gulf during your shore excursion with us!
The Corniche of Doha
The Corniche is a kilometre-long beach promenade that runs along the bay of Doha. Take a relaxing stroll along the promenade or discover one of the numerous museums that have been created along the shore. In addition to the Museum of Islamic Art, you’ll find the National Museum of Qatar at the southern end of the Corniche, which opened in late 2018 and where you can learn more about the history of Qatar.
From the Corniche you also have a unique view of the skyline of the West Bay of Doha, which is particularly characterized by numerous skyscrapers and futuristic buildings. This view is particularly impressive in the evening, as the numerous skyscrapers are illuminated by the sun during sunset.
Museum of Islamic Art
The Museum of Islamic Art is considered one of the most famous sights of the city and is located in the western part of the port on an artificial island. It was designed by the 91-year-old star architect I. M. Pei and opened in 2008. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Islamic artworks, making it one of the most important museums of Islamic art. In the characteristic building, you can admire impressive works of art from different eras on several levels. Among the most remarkable parts of the collection work in ceramics, glass and textiles. There is also an Alain Ducasse restaurant and café in the Museum of Islamic Art, from where you have a wonderful view of the city skyline.
The Pearl is an artificially built, futuristic harbour in the north of the city center. The island has the shape of a shell and is supposed to remind, together with the name, of past pearl dive sites of the region. The island can be reached in only a few minutes by boat. Along the lively promenade, you can find numerous cafés and restaurants. The offer ranges from an ice cream parlour to a five-star restaurant. In addition, the island offers expensive villas, exclusive apartments and famous hotels with an impressive view of the sea. The popular Mediterranean-style marina is reminiscent of “The Palm” in Dubai.
A souq is an open market place that can be found in every Arab city and usually marks the center of trade. The Souq in Doha is very close to the Corniche. The history of this souq goes back in about one hundred years, but it was completely renovated in 2006 so that the traditional buildings can be preserved. Many merchants offer their goods on the market so that it smells of oriental spices and coffee everywhere. Traditional garments, crafts, colourful carpets, souvenirs and delicacies can also be found here. In a labyrinth of small alleys, surrounded by mud walls and cobblestone paths, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Arab culture and to purchase one or two souvenirs.
Aspire Academy and Aspire Tower
A visit to the Aspire Academy is an absolute must for all sports fans. The sports center was opened in 2004 and is one of the world’s largest training centers for athletes. The Aspire Academy comprises a total of 12 football pitches, various running tracks and sports halls, squash courts, power rooms, a swimming center, a hostel and a school. In addition to local top athletes, international sports talents also train regularly in the various facilities. FC Bayern Munich, among others, regularly completes its training camp in Qatar in winter. The first major international event to take place in the sports center was the Asian Games in 2006, where preparations are also underway for the 2022 Football World Cup, which will also take place in Qatar.
The site is also home to the Aspire Tower, the highest skyscraper in Qatar with a height of 300 meters and one of the city’s landmarks. The Tower accommodates a luxurious 5-star hotel and is therefore also known as the “Torch Hotel”. It was also built for the Asian Games and has the shape of an Olympic torch. At night the tower is illuminated and then it shines in all its splendour. The resemblance with a torch can be seen clearly illuminated. Beside the hotel, there is also a restaurant, a sports museum and a viewing platform in the skyscraper from where one has a spectacular panorama view over the emirate and the Gulf.
Map of the cruise port in Doha
Cruise ships dock at Doha Port. From here you can reach the city center in about 10-15 minutes by shuttle service. However, Doha Port is not yet a cruise terminal in the classic sense, but rather a multifunctional port. Since the Port Hamad container port has now been completed, the Doha Port is to be converted into a pure cruise port. The extensive project of the new cruise port “The Falcon of Doha” has already begun, but will take several years to complete. But the current cruise berth already offers taxi stands, tourist information, a café and a duty-free shop.
A 6-kilometer-long promenade, the Doha Corniche, can be reached directly near the port. Here, for example, one can go for a relaxed walk on one’s own. Thereby, one either has a view to the sea and the harbour or to the skyline Dohas. In any case, you have to leave the harbour area with the shuttle bus, as passengers are not allowed to walk there. The port shuttle will take you to the port exit.
Useful facts for your shore excursion in Doha
Shipping companies and routes
Doha has become an established destination for Oriental cruises. Qatar’s capital is therefore served by all major shipping companies, including Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, MSC, and TUI Cruises.
Doha is usually combined with ports such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain on Oriental routes. In addition, the port is increasingly also on the route plan of transits or world trips.
Entry and visa
When travelling to Qatar UK and US residents can get a free 30-day tourist visa-waiver on arrival. In order to obtain this, however, you need a passport that is valid for at least six months after the end of your stay.
In general, we recommend that you obtain information about all valid entry regulations directly from your cruise shipping company or the Federal Foreign Office before commencing your journey.
Taxi and public transportation
The main means of transport in Doha is by taxi. The fares for taxis in Qatar are set by the state. The price consists of a basic charge and a kilometre charge. The official taxis are recognizable by the fact that they have a taxi sign on the roof and are light blue. In addition, there are franchise partners who are recognizable by their colored roofs.
Alternatively, you can also use the well-developed public transport network, which is constantly being expanded. A trip with the modern and air-conditioned buses costs between 3 QAR and 10 QAR.
The national currency in Qatar is the Qatar-Riyal (QAR). A Qatar riyal is divided into 100 dirham. 1 QAR is about 0,27$. You have the possibility to withdraw cash at numerous ATMs on the spot. In addition, the use of credit cards is quite widespread, so that the common credit cards are accepted almost everywhere as a means of payment.
The best travel times for Qatar are November, December, March and April. During this time the temperatures are between 26 and 30 degrees, which is much more pleasant than the high temperatures during the summer months. During the night it cools down to a pleasant 15 degrees Celsius.
Those who prefer to explore the city during a shore excursion with pleasant temperatures of around 22 degrees should travel to Doha in January or February. However, during these months, the water temperature can already be below 20 degrees Celsius.
In the summer months it can get very hot in Qatar and temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius are not uncommon. Since sandstorms occur regularly in summer, it is often not advisable to travel to Doha in summer.
