We have put together below all information about the cruise port, the most beautiful sights as well as many useful information for shore excursions in Corfu.
The most beautiful sights in Corfu
Compared to many other Greek islands, Corfu is relatively poor in historical archaeological sites. This is mainly due to the fact that the island itself had a rather unimportant position in the northern outskirts in ancient Greek. However there is still a lot to see.
Kérkyra
Korfu’s capital Kérkyra (also the name of the island in Greek language) invites you for a walk. It is a short walking distance from the cruise terminal. The relatively small island also allow a spontaneous Corfu shore excursion.
In Kérkyra you should definitely visit Spianáda, a sprawling esplanade that is the center of social life here. If the ship’s lay time permits, Spianáda should be experienced especially in the evenings. The archaeological museum just south of the city center is well worth a visit. If you are out in the morning you should not miss the market on the Agora: there is always something going on here, and the fresh goods (meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts, herbs and flowers) immediately whet your app etite! The market hours are weekdays from 7 to 14 o’clock.
Achíllion
The most popular destination on Corfu is probably Achíllion Castle, located in the east of the island. It was built at the end of the 19th century by Austria’s Empress Sissi and later acquired by the German Emperor Willhelm II. Both had a penchant for the ancient Greek hero Achilles, to whom they built various monuments in the extensive parks.
The interior of the castle can also be visited, and those who have had enough of the cultural influences can taste very tasty wines and liqueurs in the small distillery Vassilákis.
Angelókastro
The ruins of the Venetian-Byzantine „Castel Sant’Angelo are in the west of the island. It served as a refuge and defense for the people of Corfu against the attack by the Turks in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the four centuries of reign of the Venetians, the castle also served as a checkpoint for ship and commercial traffic between the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea.
From the capital, Kérkyra, you can reach Angelókastro by car in about an hour.
Canal d’Amour
Located on the north coast of Corfu, the Canal d’Amour combines spectacular beauty of the coastal landscape with great swimming opportunities in the Adriatic Sea. However, it is a rocky beach.
The beach gets its name from the legend that a “woman” can wish for a man here … if she is ready to go into the water.
You can reach the Canal d’Amour in about an-hour’s drive from Kérkyra.
Mouse Island
In the east of the island, only 2.5 miles south of Kérkyra, the Byzantine chapel Pontikonisi is located on a small island just a few meters from the main island of Corfu.
The chapel is framed by cypresses, which gives the small island an interesting symmetrical look. The view from the higher rocks of the main island to the open sea with the “mouse island” in foreground is a fantastic photo opportunity.
Map of the cruise port in Corfu
There is only one cruise terminal in Corfu. This facilitates orientation.
Most major cruise ships dock at one of the piers located on the L-shaped wharf. From there you can either reach the terminal building in a few minutes on foot or (even more convenient), your cruise company offers a shuttle service. If you have also booked a guided Corfu cruise excursion through us, your guide will be waiting for you as soon as you leave the ship.
In the terminal itself you will find both car rental companies and a large duty-free shop. You also get a city map here.
Worth knowing for shore excursions in Corfu
Shipping companies and routes
Corfu is regularly visited on both Adriatic cruises and routes through the eastern Mediterranean. MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises will arrive in Corfu in the 2018 season. Also smaller shipping companies like Phoenix.
Entry and visa
Greece is a member of the European Union and has ratified the Schengen Agreement. Canadian and US citizens do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area of countries in Europe for tourism or business stays under ninety (90) days.
Depending on the route of the shipping company, it may be necessary to carry a valid passport, for example, for ports in Turkey (such as Bodrum).
To be on the safe side, please check with your cruise company about the valid entry requirements on your cruise route.
Taxi and public transport
Immediately after leaving the cruise ship terminal through the western exit, you will find taxis.
Buses also leave directly from the car park outside the terminal building. Take lines 16 or 17 towards Kérkyra downtown.
Currency
Euro is the national currency in Greece and thus in Corfu. A currency exchange is therefore required. ATMs are in Kérkyra, however they are rather rare outside the capital. Of course you can pay by credit card in most restaurants, bars, shops etc. It gets more difficult at beach kiosks or, of course, at the daily market, or at Agora.
Travel time
Due to its relatively northern location, Corfu has the milder climate compared to many other Greek islands. Nevertheless, during the high season it can be very hot and be dry. In July and August there is hardly any rain and the daily maximum temperatures are constantly above 30 °C / 86 °F.
The microclimate Corfu allows the island a species-rich vegetation. Therefore Corfu shines in full bloom in spring, e.g. of olives or lemon trees. It is also less hot, perfect for hiking or sightseeing.
