The most beautiful sights in Åndalsnes
Åndalsnes
The small town of Åndalsnes is located at Isfjord, an arm of the Romsdalsfjord. Since the 19th century, the city has been the starting point for excursions to Romsdalen and Romsdal Alps. Due to the heavy destruction in Åndalsnes during World War II, the small town offers rather few sights. Near the harbor, there is an eye-catching building, Norsk Tindesenter Visitor Center, which is all about mountain climbing
Trollstigen
About 20 km (12 mi) south of Åndalsnes is one of Norway’s most popular attractions: the Trollstigen road with its eleven hairpin curves and 11% rise.
The overwhelming road is surrounded by high mountain peaks such as Kongen (the king), Dronninga (the queen) and Bispen (the bishop). At the summit there is the viewpoint “Utsikten”, which offers a breathtaking view over the entire course of the road as well as over the surrounding valleys and fjords.
Trollryggen
South of Åndalsnes are the so-called Troll peaks, known for their extremely steep cliffs.
The Troll wall or Trollveggen is with 1000m (3,280 ft) height the highest vertical and partly overhanging mountain wall of Europe. For climbers, this wall is a particularly popular challenge. By now you can choose between ten different climbing routes, most of which are bigwall climbing.
Rauma Line
The Raumabane is a single-track, non-electrified railway line, which is one of the most beautiful and romantic railways in Norway.
The emerald river Rauma flows along the route, which eventually gives it its name. This route starts in Dombås and ends after 114 km (70 mi) in Åndalsnes. During the excursion, you can see many sights when the train goes slowlier or even take some photos when it stops at a couple of well-known landmarks like e.g. the famous Kylling bridge or the Troll wall.
