The most beautiful sights in Ålesund
Ålesund is known for its Art Nouveau style. The beautiful trademark of the city makes it a great destination and at the same time holds an exciting part of Norwegian history. In 1904, the city fire of Ålesund caused great damage, burning down almost the entire inner city. Around 850 houses were destroyed and 10,000 inhabitants were without a home.
The former wooden house were then rebuilt, thanks to the high level of unemployment in Norway – many architects and craftsmen flocked to the city hoping to find work. Within seven years almost exclusively stone houses in the incomparable Art Nouveau style emerged.
View points of the Akslas mountain
In the overwhelming fjord landscape of Norway lies the small town of Ålesund, nestled in the picturesque ensemble of mountains and water that meanders through the tiny islands. This natural spectacle invites you to observe from above.
If you want to enjoy a wonderful view of Ålesund’s archipelago with the Sunnmors Alps in the background, you should climb the Aksla mountain. Its 418 steps leads to the viewpoints Fjellstua and Kniven. These can also be reached by city train, bus or taxi.
Art Nouveau architecture
As if natural highlights are not beautiful enough, Ålesund also offers equally wonderful architecture. It is well-known for its beautiful turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau townscape, which you should definitely explore while strolling through the streets of Ålesund. Therefore, the Art Nouveau Center in the building of the former swan pharmacy is one of the most beautiful sights in the city. There are historical insights into the Art Nouveau and exciting history behind its creation in Ålesund.
Aquarium Atlantic Park
If you want to know more about life under water, you should visit the coveted Aquarium Atlantic Park (in Norwegian: Atlanterhavspaken). It is one of the largest aquariums in northern Europe and presents the marine fauna of Norway in large landscaped pools. Diving shows and crab fishing are among the diverse programs and inspire just like the penguin park of the outdoor area. This cruise excursion destination thrills the whole family, as it is also an exciting highlight for children.
